Matthew 21:33 Meaning Hear Another Parable

Hear another parable. There was a man who was a master of a household, who planted a vineyard, set a hedge about it, dug a wine press in it, built a tower, leased it out to farmers, and went into another country.

What does Matthew 21:33 mean?

The whole body is set up as a vineyard by the higher power, then handed over to the lower nature to work. The householder is the indwelling spirit that plants the field of a person and equips it fully, the vineyard is the body and inner life made to yield spiritual fruit.

The whole body is set up as a vineyard by the higher power, then handed over to the lower nature to work. The householder is the indwelling spirit that plants the field of a person and equips it fully, the vineyard is the body and inner life made to yield spiritual fruit. The hedge guards that inner life from what would trample it, the winepress is the deep place within where experience is crushed into wisdom, and the tower is the raised watching faculty set over it all. Letting it out to husbandmen and going far off is spirit entrusting the equipped body to the caretaking self and withdrawing.

A person is a vineyard already given every provision to produce. The spirit that built it steps back, and the lower self is left tending the ground it did not make, answerable for what it yields.

Vineyard: the body and inner life planted to bring forth spiritual fruit Householder: the indwelling spirit that plants and fully equips the field of a person, then withdraws Hedge: the guarding boundary set round the inner life to keep out what would trample it Winepress: the deep place within where the fruit of experience is crushed into wisdom Tower: the raised watching faculty built to keep guard over the whole inner ground Husbandmen: the lower caretaking self left in charge of a body it did not create Far country: the withdrawn state of the spirit, present in the field yet seemingly distant

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Everything a person works with was prepared and handed over, not made from nothing. The vineyard comes already planted, already hedged, already fitted with press and tower. A man wakes into a world stocked by labor he did not perform, given language and safety and order laid down by the dead. He is a tenant. The arrangement is a trust.

Then the owner withdraws to a far country, and that distance is the whole test. The husbandmen are left alone with what is not theirs, and how they treat it while no one watches reveals who they are. Responsibility is precisely this, tending well what was placed in your care by another. A person who forgets he was given his vineyard begins to act as though he grew it himself. Handle what you inherited as a debt to be honored, because it was never yours to squander.

Live Matthew 21:33 today

  1. Walk through one room of your home slowly and see how much of it you were given rather than made, down to the water in the tap, and let that settle before you ask for anything else today.
  2. Thank someone for a thing you have quietly treated as standard, a ride, a shared meal, a coworker who covers for you, and be specific about what it saves you.
  3. When you feel most like everything depends on you, say out loud that you are looking after something you did not build, and do the next task with the care of someone borrowing it.

Bhagavad Gita 13

The body is a field, and something in you is the knower of that field. Learning to tell the two apart is where real understanding begins.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You did not choose your body, your family, or your circumstances. They are on loan, handed to you to tend well, and the tending is the only part that is yours.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

The work is not yours to finish, and you are not free to walk away from it. You were put in a field you did not plant and asked to keep working it.
