Matthew 22:14 Meaning For Many Are Called

For many are called, but few chosen.

What does Matthew 22:14 mean?

The call sounds through every person alike, because the inner summons to rise is universal and spares no one; the awakening voice reaches all the faculties without exception. But being chosen is not decided by the caller.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The call sounds through every person alike, because the inner summons to rise is universal and spares no one; the awakening voice reaches all the faculties without exception. But being chosen is not decided by the caller. It is decided by what in a person answers and stays. The many are all the impulses that hear the summons and drift back to sleep, and the few are those parts that hold to the rising and are kept.

Election is the inward sorting of a single being, the winnowing of what will follow the higher pull from what only heard it and let it pass. The summons is given freely to all; the keeping belongs to the few faculties that actually turn toward the light and remain turned.

Live Matthew 22:14 today

  1. Take the one small thing you keep meaning to start and do it today for five minutes, badly. The gap between people who change and people who do not is almost entirely in the second week, not the first day.
  2. When a good impulse arrives in a conversation, send the message, make the apology, say the thank you, act on it before the conversation ends. Most of these die quietly within the hour of being felt.
  3. When you are tired tonight and ready to drop the thing you promised yourself, do the smallest possible version of it anyway. Staying is made of nights like this one, not of the good days.

What have I felt pulled toward many times and never once stayed with?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Many hear the teaching and few walk it. The hearing is easy and free, and the staying is the whole thing.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Stop announcing what kind of person you intend to be and be it. Everyone gets the idea, almost nobody keeps the practice past the first week.

Zen

The gate stands open to anyone. What thins the crowd is not the gate, it is the walking, day after day, with nothing exciting happening.
