Matthew 22:17 Meaning Tell Us Therefore

Tell us therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?

What does Matthew 22:17 mean?

The body and the world have their own physical claims, and the divine part within has its own, and these are simply not the same domain. The question is built to force a political side, to make the inner kingdom take up an outer quarrel, but the 2 things belong to different orders and are kept separate.

Esoteric

The body and the world have their own physical claims, and the divine part within has its own, and these are simply not the same domain. The question is built to force a political side, to make the inner kingdom take up an outer quarrel, but the 2 things belong to different orders and are kept separate. The outer ruling self, the body with its physical laws and urges, gets its physical due, and that settles nothing about the part of a person that is turned inward.

The answer is not a stance on empire but a refusal to confuse the outer order with the inner one; give the body and the world what belongs to them, and turn inward for what belongs to God.

Caesar: the body's physical laws and urges, the outer ruling self and its claims on the flesh.

Live Matthew 22:17 today

  1. Pay the bill, answer the email, do the errand you have been circling, today, without turning it into a story about your life. Some things just need doing and mean nothing about who you are.
  2. When someone pulls you into taking a side in a conflict that is not yours, in a group chat or at the table, you can be kind without enlisting. Warmth and refusal fit together fine.
  3. Under pressure today, ask once what is actually yours here. Most of the weight you feel in a hard hour belongs to someone else's expectations, the traffic, the economy, the weather.

Which claims on me today are real, and which ones have I just agreed to carry?

Bhagavad Gita

Do what your situation actually asks of you, fully, while staying unattached to the outcome. The work belongs to the world and the stillness belongs to you.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are up to you and some are not, and almost all suffering comes from mixing up which is which. Sort the two and life gets simple.

Zen

After the deepest realization, you still wash your bowl. The inner thing does not excuse you from the dishes, and the dishes do not touch the inner thing.
