Matthew 22:34 · World English Bible
But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together.
The hypocritical literalists gather whenever the higher awareness silences one faction of the outer mind, for the scholarly part of a person hinders the way within and closes ranks to protect the letter. The Pharisees are that religious literalism, and their gathering is the reflex of the mind that will not go inward, massing its arguments the moment stillness begins to answer them.

ESOTERIC
The hypocritical literalists gather whenever the higher awareness silences one faction of the outer mind, for the scholarly part of a person hinders the way within and closes ranks to protect the letter. The Pharisees are that religious literalism, and their gathering is the reflex of the mind that will not go inward, massing its arguments the moment stillness begins to answer them. Silence is the feminine, the receptive stillness in which truth is heard, and it is precisely this that the gathered literalists rise against.
When one voice of doubt is quieted, another cluster of belief hardens to take its place, because the surface mind defends its hold on the words. The gathering is the whole apparatus of external religion drawing together to keep a person from entering the inner room.

What would you hear if you stopped assembling your reply?
The one who knows does not keep talking, and the one who keeps talking does not know. Stillness holds what argument always loses.
An empty cup can be filled, a full one only spills. The mind busy defending itself has no room left for anything true.
The teachers said silence is a fence around wisdom, a protection for it rather than an absence of it. What is quiet is not empty.
