Matthew 22:40 Meaning The Whole Law and the Prophets Depend

The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.

What does Matthew 22:40 mean?

Every teaching the mind has ever received about how to live comes down at last to one movement, the choice for love over fear, and beside that single correction the rest is only elaboration. When the mind loves its source wholly and sees the other as itself, nothing further can be asked, for the separation that every rule was written to manage is undone at its root.

Christian Psychology

Every teaching the mind has ever received about how to live comes down at last to one movement, the choice for love over fear, and beside that single correction the rest is only elaboration. When the mind loves its source wholly and sees the other as itself, nothing further can be asked, for the separation that every rule was written to manage is undone at its root.

So the vast weight of requirement that seemed to bind the self is quietly lifted. What looked like an endless burden rests entirely on one gentle recognition, and the mind that has made that choice finds it has already fulfilled all the many words were reaching toward.

Live Matthew 22:40 today

  1. Instead of running your whole mental list of what you should be doing better, pick the one thing underneath it: are you acting from love or from fear right now. The list sorts itself out from there.
  2. With one person today, drop the rules you keep about them, who owes whom a text, who apologized last, and just be kind. See how much of the tension was only bookkeeping.
  3. When you are stuck on a hard call at work, under time pressure and with people watching, ask the simplest version of the question: which choice here is the generous one. That is almost always the answer the complicated analysis was circling.

How many of your rules for living are really just one rule, said many times?

Tao Te Ching 38

When the deepest kindness is forgotten, people invent rules to replace it, and the more rules pile up, the further off the real thing has drifted. The elaborate code is a sign of what went missing.

All the volumes of teaching are a finger pointing at the moon. Study the finger forever and you still have not looked up.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

When an action is in question, return to the one thing: what does reason, what does the good, ask of me right now. Keep coming back to that and the thousand smaller questions settle themselves.
