Matthew 22:45 Meaning If Then David Calls Him Lord

“If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”

What does Matthew 22:45 mean?

David is the whole human race gathered into one figure, the sum of everyone's living and dying, and out of that mass the Son comes forth. So the riddle answers itself once you see who David is.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

David is the whole human race gathered into one figure, the sum of everyone's living and dying, and out of that mass the Son comes forth. So the riddle answers itself once you see who David is. He fathers the Son as the collective from which awareness rises, and yet he turns and calls that awakened one Lord, because the one who wakes is the Father who was buried in him all along.

The order is reversed from what the world expects. The son does not come after the father in time here; the father is discovered by the son. When imagination stirs awake inside a person, the entire past that shaped him bows and names him Lord. He is both the field that grew the harvest and the harvest itself. The man who wakes finds he was always the one he was searching for.

Live Matthew 22:45 today

  1. Sometime today, pick one thing you have always said made you who you are, your family, your hometown, a job that shaped you. Sit with it for a minute and consider that the awareness looking back at it is the older thing.
  2. When someone asks you how you got to where you are, try answering without handing the credit away to luck or to another person. See how it feels to say plainly that you built it from the inside.
  3. In a moment today when you feel small, maybe stuck in traffic or waiting for a reply that is not coming, say quietly to yourself, I am the one I was waiting for. Then drive, or wait, like someone who means it.

What have I been looking for outside myself that has been doing the looking all along?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

The seeker spends years asking who made him and what power runs his days, and the answer turns out to be the one asking. The self he was looking for was the self doing the looking.

Zen

A student asks the teacher where to find the Buddha, and the teacher says it is like riding an ox while hunting for an ox. The whole search was being carried out by the thing searched for.
