Matthew 24:20 Meaning Pray That Your Flight Will Not Be

Pray that your flight will not be in the winter, nor on a Sabbath,

What does Matthew 24:20 mean?

The escape upward is measured against 2 conditions inside the body. Winter is the cold, fruitless season of a person, the barren stretch when nothing is ripening; to flee then is to try to rise while the inner life lies dry.

Esoteric

The escape upward is measured against 2 conditions inside the body. Winter is the cold, fruitless season of a person, the barren stretch when nothing is ripening; to flee then is to try to rise while the inner life lies dry. The sabbath is the seventh center, the crown, the pineal gland where the sevenfold ascent completes, so the caution about that day speaks to the state of that high center itself and not to any calendar.

Timing is the whole matter. The rising of a person should not fall in the frozen season, nor be forced against the very completion-point that the ascent is climbing toward. What is prayed for is simply the right inner moment to rise.

Live Matthew 24:20 today

  1. If you sit down alone today to sort out something big, a decision, a prayer, a hard conversation you are rehearsing, and you find you have nothing in you, let that be information instead of failure. Put the kettle on, go to bed early, and come back to it when you are not running on empty.
  2. Someone in your group chat or across the dinner table is going to be dry today, short answers, flat energy. Do not pull the big question out of them tonight. Ask it on a day they have something to give.
  3. When the pressure is on at work and the obvious move is to force the breakthrough in the last twenty minutes of a meeting, say out loud that you want to pick it up tomorrow. Forcing it at the wrong hour usually costs you the week.

What have I been trying to force lately, and what would change if I simply waited for a better hour?

Tao Te Ching

The way of things has its own tempo, and acting against it costs more than waiting. What ripens on its own holds; what is pulled early comes apart in the hand.

Zen · Dogen

Practice is not a push toward a later result. Sit as the season sits, and the ripening is already happening inside the sitting.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He compared the ripening of a person to the ripening of a fig: it needs time, blossom, then fruit. Wanting the fruit without the season is wanting an impossibility.
