Matthew 24:36 Meaning But No One Knows of That Day

But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

What does Matthew 24:36 mean?

Anyone who claims to have calculated the end has stepped outside what God has chosen to give. Hidden knowledge is not a puzzle left for the clever to crack; it is withheld on purpose, and the withholding is itself a mercy.

Anyone who claims to have calculated the end has stepped outside what God has chosen to give. Hidden knowledge is not a puzzle left for the clever to crack; it is withheld on purpose, and the withholding is itself a mercy.

Christ, true God and true man, speaks here from within a real human mind, which did not carry the Father's decree as information to hand on. That silence is meant to produce readiness rather than speculation. If the hour were known, faithfulness would become a schedule, and people would live badly until the deadline approached. Not knowing turns every ordinary day into the one that counts, which is exactly the vigilance being asked for.

Live Matthew 24:36 today

  1. Do today the thing you have been saving for when life calms down, even a small piece of it. The calm stretch may not be coming.
  2. Say the warm thing to the person you assume you will have plenty of time to say it to. One text, today, not a speech.
  3. When you catch yourself living badly on the theory that you will straighten up later, stop the sentence halfway. Later is a guess. Right now is not.

If this ordinary day were the one that counted, what would you do differently in the next hour?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You could leave life right now. Let that settle what you do and say and think, instead of planning to become good later.

Buddhism

Death comes without warning, like a thief, and no one is told the hour. That uncertainty is exactly what makes this ordinary afternoon worth being awake for.

Tao Te Ching

Those who claim to know do not know. The sage stops trying to see past the horizon and attends to what is actually in front of them.
