Matthew 24:9 · World English Bible

Matthew 24:9 Meaning Then They Will Deliver You Up

Then they will deliver you up to oppression, and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake.

What does Matthew 24:9 mean?

The one waking inside a person is handed over to affliction by the very forces of the lower nature it lives among. The awakening self becomes the enemy of every appetite and habit it once served, so the whole body of the flesh turns against it, delivering it up and pressing to kill it, meaning to smother the new awareness before it can hold.

The nations are the massed lower faculties, the many drives and reactions in a person, and they hate the rising self because its name, its true inner nature, exposes and threatens them.

Being hated for the name's sake is the inward truth of it: the higher identity, once it stirs, is opposed by everything in a person that lives on the old order. What looks like persecution from the world is first this civil war inside a single body, the flesh rejecting the spirit that would rule it.

Nations: the massed lower faculties and drives within a person, the crowd of appetites that turn on the rising self.

Live Matthew 24:9 today

  1. When a better intention surfaces this morning, something as small as leaving the phone face down for an hour, expect the pushback from inside you and let it come. The restless pull is not a sign you chose wrong, it is the old habit objecting.
  2. If someone close to you reacts badly to a change you are making, less scrolling at dinner, an earlier night, a quieter group chat, stay kind and stay with the change. You can hold both without arguing about it.
  3. In a stressful meeting or a traffic jam, watch for the voice that says drop the whole thing and go back to how you were. Answer it with one small act of the new way instead of a debate.

Which part of me fights hardest when I try to live better, and what is it protecting?

Bhagavad Gita 6

The mind is the friend of the one who has mastered it and the enemy of the one who has not. The same faculties that carried you can turn and fight you the moment you try to govern them.

Sufism · al-Ghazali

The hardest war is the one fought against your own soul inside your own chest, because every habit you have fed will resist being ruled.

Stoicism · Epictetus

When you begin to live by reason, expect your old cravings to mock and resist you first. Hold your course anyway, and the resistance becomes the proof you have started.
