What does Matthew 26:45 mean?

There is a sleep deeper than the body's, the slumber of a life lived entirely in the dream of thought. You can move and speak and plan and still be utterly asleep to the aliveness of this moment.

Ego v. Being

There is a sleep deeper than the body's, the slumber of a life lived entirely in the dream of thought. You can move and speak and plan and still be utterly asleep to the aliveness of this moment. Sleep on, then, if you must, but understand what such sleep costs you.

The hour is always at hand. The fullness of life, the presence in which everything real happens, is here now, offering itself while the mind dozes in its stories of past and future. To awaken is simply to become conscious in this moment instead of dreaming through it, and each moment you sleep is a moment of your one life quietly handed away.

Live Matthew 26:45 today

  1. Take one ordinary thing today, the first sip of coffee or the shower, and actually be there for it with no plan running underneath. Taste it, feel the water, let it be the whole event.
  2. At dinner or on a drive with someone, put the screens out of reach and let the quiet stretches be quiet. The hour you are in with them is the one that is real.
  3. On your commute, try leaving the podcast off and looking out the window at the light, the trees, the other faces. Nothing to gain from it, it is simply your life passing and you are here for it.

How much of today did you actually show up for?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

One old line asks where you are going to look for your life, when it is happening right here. The search itself is the sleep.

Buddhism

The teaching says to do today's work today, because no one is promised tomorrow. The hour you have is the only one offered.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca wrote that most people are not short of time, they are careless with it, spending life on everything except living it. We lose it in small pieces without seeing them go.
