Matthew 26:51 Meaning Behold

Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.

What does Matthew 26:51 mean?

Force cuts off hearing. The one who reaches for the sword acts from the reactive lower nature, and the first thing lost in that violence is the ear, the capacity to receive the inner word.

Force cuts off hearing. The one who reaches for the sword acts from the reactive lower nature, and the first thing lost in that violence is the ear, the capacity to receive the inner word. Energy moves out through the right hand, but drawn as a weapon it wounds the very faculty that alone could carry a person across the inner threshold. The high priest's servant is the part of the self bound to the doorway of the inner sanctuary, and striking it deaf shows how struggle and aggression close the passage that only stillness opens.

No outer fight, no clenched will, brings a person into the inner chamber. That entry belongs to the priest-self alone, in quiet, and the drawn sword only silences the ear that was meant to listen its way in.

Hand: energy, drawn in through the left and sent out through the right. Sword: the reactive force of the lower nature that wounds rather than opens. High priest: the part of you that alone can enter the inner membrane of the brain. Servant of the high priest: the faculty stationed at the doorway of the inner sanctuary, the ear that receives the word. Ear: the inner hearing that takes in the silent word, the first thing lost to force.

  1. In your next disagreement by text, write the sharp reply in the notes app instead of the message box, then read it once and write something plainer. The edge you cut with is usually aimed at your own hearing.
  2. When someone at home or at work says something that stings, do not answer for one beat and ask them to say more. The impulse is to swing, and the only thing a swing closes is your ability to understand what they meant.
  3. In a meeting where you feel talked over, do not raise your voice to take the floor back. Write one line down, wait for the gap, and say it quietly, because the room hears calm longer than it hears volume.

What have I stopped being able to hear because I was busy defending myself?

Tao Te Ching 43

What is soft gets through where what is hard only breaks. The yielding thing passes into places the blade cannot open.

Zen

An answer shouted over someone cannot be heard by them, and a mind braced to strike cannot take anything in. Listening and fighting use the same room, and only one of them can be in it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

We were given two ears and one mouth so that we would take in more than we put out. Whoever is busy answering has stopped receiving.
