Matthew 26:72 Meaning Again He Denied It with an Oath

Again he denied it with an oath, “I don’t know the man.”

What does Matthew 26:72 mean?

The denial deepens, and the mind now swears to its own forgetting, binding itself with an oath to make the lie feel solid. Each repetition is the ego tightening its story that the self it once cherished is unknown, a mere man among strangers.

The denial deepens, and the mind now swears to its own forgetting, binding itself with an oath to make the lie feel solid. Each repetition is the ego tightening its story that the self it once cherished is unknown, a mere man among strangers. Fear works this way. It does not strike the truth once and rest; it circles back and insists again, hoping vehemence will pass for certainty.

What is sworn away here is not a person on trial but the mind's own bond with love. To disown the man is to disown the memory of innocence within, and peace returns only when a mind stops swearing to a separation that was never real.

The man: love appearing in a form the frightened mind refuses to claim, the innocent self disowned as a stranger

  1. If you catch yourself rehearsing the same line in your head, "I'm not that kind of person," "that part of me is gone," let it go quiet for one breath instead of saying it a third time. The repeating is the tell.
  2. When someone brings up a version of you that you would rather not claim, in a group chat or at the dinner table, resist the quick joke that puts distance between you and it. A plain "yeah, that was me" costs less than it seems to.
  3. Under pressure, when the easy move is to firmly deny something you half know is true, drop the force first. Say the same sentence without the heat and see whether you still mean it.

What have I been saying about myself so emphatically that I have stopped checking whether it is true?

Zhuangzi

A man ran from his own shadow and shouted that it was a stranger chasing him, and the faster he ran the more certain he became. What he swore against was only himself, and the running was the whole problem.

All that we are arises with our thoughts, and with our thoughts we make the world. Repeat a thought and you are not describing what is there, you are building what you will then call real.

Stoicism · Epictetus

We are not shaken by what happens but by the account we give of it, and we give the same account twice as loudly when we suspect it is false. Loudness is not proof; it is usually fear asking to be believed.
