Matthew 27:13 Meaning Then Pilate Said to Him

Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how many things they testify against you?”

What does Matthew 27:13 mean?

Fear counts up the evidence and is bewildered that anyone could stay untroubled beneath it. The many things witnessed feel overwhelming precisely because the world measures truth by the number of accusers, as if guilt could be established by a show of hands.

Fear counts up the evidence and is bewildered that anyone could stay untroubled beneath it. The many things witnessed feel overwhelming precisely because the world measures truth by the number of accusers, as if guilt could be established by a show of hands. But a chorus of charges against the innocent proves nothing except how loudly fear can speak.

The question put by Pilate is really the ego's own astonishment that a mind might hear all this and remain unshaken. What it cannot grasp is that a mind seeing every witness as a dream figure has nothing to hear that could make it afraid, because none of it describes what is actually there.

Witnesses: the accumulated proofs the ego gathers to make guilt seem real, the many voices testifying to a sin that was never committed.

  1. When your feed or notifications pile up with reasons to feel bad about yourself, scroll to a stop and ask what of this is actually happening in your room right now.
  2. If several people in a group chat agree you got it wrong, hear them without taking the headcount as proof. Weigh the one thing that might be true, not the number of voices.
  3. Under pressure at work, when the complaints stack up fast, write down the single specific thing being asked of you. The rest is volume.

How much of what weighs on you is evidence, and how much is only loudness?

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

The opinions of many do not make a thing true. Ask instead what is actually here, apart from what everyone is saying about it.

Buddhism

What you call yourself is a bundle of passing impressions, not a fixed thing anyone can accuse. Charges land on a figure that was never solid.

Tao Te Ching

The loud is not the true. Great sound can be nearly silent, and a crowd of voices proves only its own volume.
