Matthew 27:45 · World English Bible
Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
At the very center of the story, the light goes out. Not as a defeat, but as a threshold.
From the Ego v. Being reading below.
The same verse, read by 2 traditions.

EGO & BEING
At the very center of the story, the light goes out. Not as a defeat, but as a threshold. Something in the old self is being undone, and the darkness that falls over the land is the darkness every person meets when the familiar structures of identity fall away.
Three hours it lasts, and then it passes. This is the truth of any deep letting go. When the ego with all its resistance is stripped down, there is a stretch of formless dark that feels like nothing at all. You endure it not by struggling but by being present within it, and on the other side of that emptiness, something new can finally be born.

ESOTERIC
Darkness falls over the whole field of a person when the light withdraws inward for its deepest work. The number 6 is the number of man, the flesh at its full stretch, and the number 9 marks an ending brought to completion; between the 6th and the 9th hour the lower nature is suspended and dying while awareness hangs between its opposites.
The dark is not punishment but the shutting of the outer senses so the change can finish unseen, the way a seed works underground before anything shows above.
Sixth hour: the number of man, the flesh at its fullest reach. Ninth hour: the number of completion, the ending of the lower nature's hold. Darkness over the land: the outer senses shut down so the inward change can finish hidden from view.
Ego v. Being lens
Can you stay present in a stretch of your life that feels like nothing?
All things return to the quiet root, and the one who can stay still in that emptiness without panic comes back clear. The dark is a turning, not an ending.
Rumi writes that the field must be emptied and plowed before anything can grow in it, and that the wound is where the light gets in. Loss clears ground.
The Upanishads describe deep sleep, where all the familiar forms vanish and awareness alone remains. Nothing is lost there, though it looks like nothing at all.
