Matthew 27:50 Meaning Jesus Cried Again with a Loud Voice

Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.

What does Matthew 27:50 mean?

The loud cry is the final surge of energy up the spine, the whole force of the body gathered and released at the top in one great outbreath. To yield up the ghost is the letting go of the breath-life at the crown, the point where the personal self is surrendered and the spirit passes out of the flesh through the head.

The loud cry is the final surge of energy up the spine, the whole force of the body gathered and released at the top in one great outbreath. To yield up the ghost is the letting go of the breath-life at the crown, the point where the personal self is surrendered and the spirit passes out of the flesh through the head. This is the death that is really a release, the lower man giving up the current so it can rise.

Within a person it is the moment of complete surrender when the breath is offered up and the seat of the ego is emptied, the crucified self loosing its hold at last.

Live Matthew 27:50 today

  1. Once today, sit for one slow breath out and let the exhale finish all the way, including whatever you were braced for. Try it before you open your laptop or unlock the screen.
  2. In one conversation, stop running the version of you that has to win it. Let the need to be right leave on the outbreath and see what the other person says to the person who is left.
  3. In the hour when you most want control, a delayed flight, a stuck line, a decision someone else is making, say plainly to yourself that this is not yours to hold, and release your grip on it for the duration.

What am I still gripping with a hand that is too tired to keep holding it?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Let go of your grip on yourself and you are carried. The hand that clenches gets tired; the open one is held.

Sufism · Rumi

The reed becomes music only after it is hollowed out. Emptied of itself, the breath can finally pass through.

Bhagavad Gita 12

Hand over the outcome and the fear thins out. Surrender is not defeat; it is where the weight leaves your shoulders.
