Matthew 3:14 Meaning But John Would Have Hindered Him
But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”

Matthew 3:14 · World English Bible
But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”
John's protest is a startled flash of recognition: even a well-prepared mind pulls back when the holy stands before it in a living human form. The wilderness prophet has earned his standing through hard, careful discipline, yet at the river everything suddenly turns around on him.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
John's protest is a startled flash of recognition: even a well-prepared mind pulls back when the holy stands before it in a living human form.
The wilderness prophet has earned his standing through hard, careful discipline, yet at the river everything suddenly turns around on him. The man who dips others under cannot hand wholeness to wholeness. In an old image of a great bowl brimming with the divine mind, those who lower themselves in are the ones who receive a higher awareness rather than giving it out; the one who baptizes becomes the one who must yield. John putting words to the mismatch is deeper guidance starting its work, the opening through which opposites can finally be joined.

Who have I been teaching when I should have been listening?
A student asked an old master for teaching and the master said he had nothing to give. The deepest lessons often come from the person you thought you were there to instruct.
The sage leads by taking the lower place. Whoever insists on standing above cannot receive anything, because nothing flows uphill.
Rumi described the reed flute as empty, which is exactly why music passes through it. Fullness has nothing to receive.
