Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

What does Matthew 3:17 mean?

The Son beloved and already pleasing is not one person set above the rest but the truth of what every mind is beneath its fear. Love does not wait for achievement before it is well pleased, for its pleasure rests on what it created, not on what the world later did.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The Son beloved and already pleasing is not one person set above the rest but the truth of what every mind is beneath its fear. Love does not wait for achievement before it is well pleased, for its pleasure rests on what it created, not on what the world later did.

A mind that could hear this of itself would need no defense and no proof of worth. It would recognize that it was never in danger of losing love, having been held as innocent from the start, whatever the story of guilt had claimed.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A voice comes from the formless, calling him beloved. This is the deepest truth about what you are, hidden beneath the anxious self that is always striving to earn its worth. Before you do anything, before you succeed or fail, you are already an expression of the one Life, and that Life delights in its own being as you.

The voice speaks of being well pleased before any great work has been done. This is not approval you must earn through effort. It is the joy of the Source recognizing itself in form. When you awaken to this, the endless seeking for validation ends, because you discover you were always held and were always enough.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The voice from heaven names a son, and that son is not another man standing in a river. It is the awareness in you owning what it has brought forth as its own beloved child. Heaven is your own consciousness, and the voice is the settled certainty that arrives when what you assumed has become fact. The pleasure is the Father's recognition of himself in the son, which is your recognition of yourself.

This moment belongs to a series of inner awakenings, and here the beloved son is accepted, claimed, no longer doubted. A person becomes this son by assuming the state he wants and staying loyal to it until it feels as settled as his own name. The old self that begged and waited is behind him. What he lives from now is the accomplished thing, held so steadily inside that the world outside has begun to say yes. Being well pleased is simply that inner yes made complete.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The inner voice speaks from the highest region of consciousness, the heaven that is the crown and summit of a person, the moment the awakened nature rises out of the waters of purification. The beloved Son is the divine self brought to birth within, the Christ consciousness recognized and owned by the source from which it came. Heaven here is not a distant sky but the exalted center at the top of the being, and the pleasure declared is the union of the whole nature with its own indwelling divinity. When a person has passed through the cleansing waters and the higher self stands revealed, the ground of one's own being affirms it. The declaration is the inner accord between a human being and the god within.

At the summit of a person the highest consciousness acknowledges the awakened divine self as its own beloved offspring, and the whole nature is brought into agreement with the god it carries.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

The sky here stands for the deep part of the mind, far larger than the small everyday self a person takes themselves to be. The voice comes not from the clouds but from that hidden depth. It names a beloved son: the whole person a life is meant to become.

This can happen to anyone. A man who long ignored his real path may one day feel a quiet certainty rise in him, a yes to who he truly is. That is what happens here: the deepest center of a person recognizes and blesses the true self he is becoming.

Live Matthew 3:17 today

  1. When you reach for your phone to check whether someone approved of you, put it down for an hour. Your worth is not in the reply, and the waiting is where you forget that.
  2. Tell someone close to you something good about who they are, not what they did. People rarely hear that the love was not about their performance.
  3. When feedback lands hard at work, separate the task from your standing. The work can be wrong without you being less loved, and holding those apart is most of the relief.

What would I stop trying to prove if I already knew I was loved as I am?

Zen

You are already complete, and because you cannot see it you spend your life trying to become it. The search was the only thing missing.

Sufism · Rumi

You were loved before you did anything to deserve it. Looking for proof of love is like a fish asking where to find water.

Hinduism · Upanishads

That which you are seeking, you already are. The self was never given as a reward, it was there before the first effort.
