Jerusalem stands for the fortress of law and family name, and the river Jordan is its opposite edge. In old symbols, running water is living spirit-water flowing out from the throne of God, a source of renewal. This water imagery clearly echoes far older rites of rebirth. Whole peoples leaving the orderly city for a ragged prophet in the wild act out the deep within breaking through our resistance, drawing the soul toward the surrender that baptism brings.

Live Matthew 3:5 today

  1. Post nothing today, or write one honest paragraph in a note only you will read. The pull to arrange yourself for an audience is strong, and stepping out of it for a day is clarifying.
  2. Tell one person something you would normally edit out, a worry, a failure, a thing you are bad at. Let the polished version of you be slightly less intact.
  3. When you feel the urge to correct someone's impression of you today, the clarifying reply, the subtle flex, skip it. Let them think what they think and get on with your day.
