Matthew 4:10 Meaning Then Jesus Said to Him

Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’ ”

What does Matthew 4:10 mean?

There comes a point where the mind stops negotiating with fear and simply sends it off. The ego is not reasoned with here; it is dismissed, because a mind cannot serve two teachers and the choice was never meant to be shared.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There comes a point where the mind stops negotiating with fear and simply sends it off. The ego is not reasoned with here; it is dismissed, because a mind cannot serve two teachers and the choice was never meant to be shared. To bow to one Source is to be free of every counterfeit that asked for worship.

The firmness is the whole lesson. Fear loses its grip not when it is argued down but when the mind gives its allegiance whole, keeping nothing back for the shadow. There is only one thing worth serving, and a mind that serves it wholly has nothing left over for fear to claim.

Satan: the ego itself, the belief in separation given a face, the voice that asks the mind to make fear its master.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Naming Satan and sending him away is the moment a person sees his most tempting darker urges clearly, and his true, whole center holds firm.

The devil who offers all kingdoms stands for the power-drunk madness that soaked the ancient world. By going into the desert, Jesus let that shared force rise into full view only to turn it down. Anyone who catches the quiet daydream of dominance dressed up as ordinary ambition stands at the same crossroads.

Worship aimed only at God, at the wholeness no throne can grant, is the one act that does not feed those darker hungers.

Live Matthew 4:10 today

  1. When a worried thought starts its pitch in your head tonight, do not sit down with it and go through the evidence. Say no, out loud if that helps, and put your attention back on the thing in front of you.
  2. In a group chat or at dinner, when someone offers you a little fear to carry, you can care about them without taking it on. Stay warm, stay present, and let the fear go unserved.
  3. Under pressure at work, when two voices want you at once, the panicked one and the quiet one, pick the quiet one fully. Half of your loyalty given to dread is still enough to keep the dread alive.

What have you been negotiating with that you could simply send away?

Bhagavad Gita

Krishna tells Arjuna to give himself with an undivided heart, since a mind split between loyalties finds no steadiness anywhere. Wholeness of devotion, not cleverness in argument, is what ends the inner war.

Zen · Linji

Linji told students to kill whatever appears on the road claiming authority, even the Buddha, even a saint. Anything that sets itself up as a second master is dismissed on sight, not debated.

Stoicism · Epictetus

When a troubling impression arrives, do not bargain with it. Say plainly that it is not what it claims to be, and refuse it the place it is asking for.
