Matthew 5:1 Meaning Seeing the Multitudes

Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

What does Matthew 5:1 mean?

Attention leaves the crowd and climbs. The multitudes are the surface thoughts, the loud carnal traffic of the day, and they are left below the moment the higher self begins to teach.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Attention leaves the crowd and climbs. The multitudes are the surface thoughts, the loud carnal traffic of the day, and they are left below the moment the higher self begins to teach. Going up into the mountain is consciousness settling into its own high country, the elevation in the head where the real instruction is heard and where the noise of the street cannot follow.

Being set is not restlessness but the quiet that comes when the ascent is complete and the mind rests in the light. Only then do the disciples draw near. These are the meditative faculties, the inner powers that gather once the outer clamor has been left behind. The lesson never begins in the marketplace of talk about religion. It begins when a person rises past the crowd inside, grows still on the height, and the deeper faculties come close to listen. That is where the teaching starts.

Multitudes: the surface, carnal thoughts and their daily traffic, left below the height Mountain: the higher realms of consciousness, the elevation in the head where truth is heard Disciples: the meditative faculties that gather and draw near once the mind is still

Live Matthew 5:1 today

  1. Find one place today where nobody can reach you, a parked car, a stairwell, the walk from the bus, and stay there without your phone until the inside of you gets quieter. The useful thought usually comes after the quiet, not before.
  2. When a group chat or a dinner table gets loud with opinions, step out of the back and forth for a few minutes. Come back when you are settled rather than when you have a better line ready.
  3. Before a meeting or a hard conversation, take sixty seconds alone first. Walk in from the still place instead of walking in from the noise you were just in.

What have I been trying to figure out in the middle of the noise that would come clear if I got still first?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The one who can be still inside the noise becomes clear. Clarity does not arrive in the middle of the clamor, it arrives when a person settles.

Buddhism

Before anything true can be seen, the mind is gathered and quieted. Insight does not come from more talk about the teaching, it comes after the settling.

Stoicism · Seneca

Step back from the crowd and the crowd's opinions. A person needs to withdraw into themselves before they can hear anything worth hearing.
