Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin,
The mind is invited to rest its gaze on what grows without striving. The lilies neither labor nor spin, yet they unfold in their given beauty, and this is held up as the picture of a self that does not have to manufacture its own worth.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The mind is invited to rest its gaze on what grows without striving. The lilies neither labor nor spin, yet they unfold in their given beauty, and this is held up as the picture of a self that does not have to manufacture its own worth. Their loveliness is not achieved but simply allowed.
So the anxious effort to clothe and adorn the self betrays a belief that a mind is bare until it makes itself acceptable. But what a mind truly is was created whole and needs no adding to. To grow like the lilies is to let being enough be the starting place, so that peace is uncovered rather than earned.
Lilies of the field: minds that unfold in their given innocence without striving, clothed in a worth they do not have to make. Raiment: the coverings the anxious mind labors to add, believing it is not acceptable as it was created.

EGO & BEING
Look closely at anything in nature and you notice it is not straining to become something else. The flower is not anxious about its growth; it simply grows, wholly given to being what it is. There is no gap in it between existing and trying to exist.
Human suffering begins in that gap, in the endless effort to secure a self through doing and achieving. To consider the lilies is not to become idle. It is to notice that you too are already alive without earning it, and to let your doing come from that ease rather than from fear.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
Worry over what to wear is the ego's signature move, the mask-building habit that mistakes costume for self and confuses the social face with the wholeness already living underneath.
The lily has no such confusion. Growing without calculation, it shows the true self in its natural state: unpracticed, not earned, whole before the first bit of striving. Wholeness cannot be stitched together by anxious hands; it asks you to stake what the ego guards most tightly, with no substitutes and no easier path. The flower opening before dawn, without effort and without design, is the image growth moves toward: not a return to innocence, but a recovery of the original ground the ego abandoned when it began spinning its anxious threads.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The lily does not manufacture its own beauty through frantic striving; it becomes glorious by unfolding what it already is, according to a pattern it did not have to invent. There is a kind of growth that is not the same as anxious labor, a flourishing that happens when a thing aligns itself with its own nature rather than forcing an outcome by will alone.
Much of what people want they try to seize by grasping, when it would come more surely by growing into it. Tend to what you are meant to become, and let it develop the way a living thing develops, and you will find that some of the finest things arrive without being wrenched into place.

BUDDHISM
The anxiety here is a thirst for guaranteed security that no amount of clothing can satisfy (taṇhā): own one robe and the mind reaches for two, two for three against next winter. Without that reaching, tomorrow's uncertainty holds no sting.
Worry spins one uncertain moment into a thicket of imagined futures (papañca): "What will I wear?" becomes "What will people think?" becomes "What if I have nothing?" "Why are you anxious?" names the spinning so the spinner can stop.
"Consider the lilies" is a directed looking that brings full attention to this flower in the field (sati). A mind seeing the lily cannot also rehearse tomorrow.
The lily does not grow by force of will. No small self inside it strains to add inches; it grows because causes and conditions allow it (anattā). When the controlling self steps back, growth happens anyway: "they toil not, neither do they spin."

CYBERNETICS
The lily is not anxious about becoming a lily. It grows by an inner design, without strain, and the beauty simply arrives. Something like that design sits inside every person, a mechanism that moves toward its goal quietly once the goal is pictured and the frantic interference is set aside.
Much of what a man calls effort is really only worry wearing a costume, and it exhausts him while producing nothing. The flower unfolds without a single anxious thought. When you give your automatic self a clear image and then relax your grip, growth comes the same effortless way, from the inside out.

SUFISM
Much of a person's worry gathers around how he will appear, whether he will be clothed well enough to hold his place among others. A man caught here labors and frets over his covering, half from need and half from the wish not to be seen as less. The striving hides a fear of being small in other eyes.
But the flowers in the field are dressed in beauty without any striving at all, simply by growing where they were placed. So the cure for this anxious laboring is to trust the hand that clothes even the grass, and the heart that leans on that care stops straining after its appearance and is quieted.

SUFISM
Look long at a wildflower and something shows through it. It never worked a loom, yet it wears a beauty it did not sew, which means the beauty was lent to it, worn for a while so that One who is lovely could be glimpsed in a stem by the roadside.
The flower is not the source of its own color; it is where a hidden splendor briefly comes to light. And the same is true of the anxious person staring at an empty closet. What clothes the field is already inclined to clothe them, and seeing that turns the worry into a kind of watching.

SUFISM
Rizq: the share allotted to every creature The tradition holds that each creature's portion is already assigned. Worry keeps running a sum in the head, weighing what will be needed against what is in hand, and it never comes out safe. Treating the portion as already set takes the sum out of a person's hands, and the fear of running short loses its footing.
Straining for what is guaranteed while neglecting what is asked of you: effort goes to the wrong half of life Ibn Ata Allah put it in one line: an anxious person pours their strongest effort into what was never in their hands. Little is left over for the part that is theirs, how they treat people, what they say, whether they keep a promise. Seeing which is which loosens the grip, because the effort was never wasted, only aimed at the wrong place.
Tawakkul: leaning on God Tawakkul is resting the weight of your needs on God. Al-Ghazali compares it to a small child with its mother, who never once plans a meal because someone else is plainly handling that. He is clear that idleness is not the point: a person still works, and still stops treating the outcome as theirs to guarantee.
Qanāʿa: contentment with enough Qanāʿa, satisfaction with what covers the need, meets a worry that is often about being seen rather than being warm. That hunger has no stopping point, because someone always has better. When a person settles on enough, the race quiets down, and what they own turns into something they use instead of something they defend.
Āyāt: signs The Quran calls created things signs, marks that point past themselves. Al-Ghazali's Niche of Lights reads the visible world this way, with every lit thing borrowing its light from one source. For a worried person, watching a living thing that is cared for without any effort of its own settles more than reasoning does.

AWARENESS
A flower has no plan to be beautiful, and that is precisely why it is. Beauty arrives in whatever has stopped straining toward it, and the whole anxiety about clothing is the ego arranging a surface for other eyes, since it has no substance of its own to rest in.
Effortlessness is not laziness. The lily grows with tremendous intensity, only without a doer standing apart from the growing, without any comparison to the lily beside it. A person living that way still works, still moves, and the tension has simply gone out of it, because nothing is being proved to anyone.
Christian Psychology lens
What am I trying to add to myself before I will let myself be at peace?
Things unfold rightly when nothing is forced onto them. The growth was never waiting on your effort.
You do not polish yourself into something worthy; you sit down and find you already were. Practice uncovers, it does not manufacture.
The tree does not labor at being a tree. It is only the human who believes worth must be produced before it can be had.
