What does Matthew 8:23 mean?

The higher awareness entering the mind, and the faculties of meditation following it in, is the beginning of the inward voyage across the waters of consciousness. The ship is the mind, and to enter it is to take command of one's own thought and set out over the deep.

The higher awareness entering the mind, and the faculties of meditation following it in, is the beginning of the inward voyage across the waters of consciousness. The ship is the mind, and to enter it is to take command of one's own thought and set out over the deep. Those who meditate follow, the trained attention falling in behind the awakened self as it puts to sea.

Below this crossing lies the serpent coiled at the base of the spine, the sleeping energy that must be raised for peace to come. To board the ship is to gather the mind for the passage, the higher center leading and the disciplined faculties following into the interior waters where the storm and the calm both wait.

Ship: the mind, boarded and steered out over the waters of consciousness Disciples: the faculties of meditation that follow the awakened self aboard

Live Matthew 8:23 today

  1. Before you look at your phone in the morning, sit on the edge of the bed for one minute and let your attention come back to you. You are not starting the day until you are the one steering it.
  2. When someone starts talking to you today, put the screen face down and let your whole attention follow them in. Being gathered is something another person can feel.
  3. When a day gets loud and pulls you in five directions, stop, take one slow breath, and pick the one thing you are actually doing. Attention follows whatever you decide to lead with.

Who is steering my mind right now, me or whatever came in last?

Katha Upanishad

The body is the chariot, the senses are the horses, and the mind is the reins. Nothing moves well until someone takes hold of the reins and chooses the road.

Zen · Dogen

To study the way is to study the self. You sit down, gather yourself, and the journey inward begins in that gathering.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The one who has mastered the mind has it as a friend, and the one who has not has it as an enemy. The practice is simply the slow work of taking the seat.
