Matthew 9:14 Meaning Then John’s Disciples Came to Him

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples don’t fast?”

What does Matthew 9:14 mean?

The complaint measures the outer discipline against the inner fullness. John's followers and the Pharisees fast because they are still emptying and preparing, still in the phase of restraint and purification that precedes the awakening.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The complaint measures the outer discipline against the inner fullness. John's followers and the Pharisees fast because they are still emptying and preparing, still in the phase of restraint and purification that precedes the awakening. The disciples who do not fast stand near the risen power itself, and one does not starve in the presence of the very life one was preparing to receive. Fasting belongs to the approach; feasting belongs to the arrival.

Inside a person these are 2 stages of the same path. The abstaining self works to still the appetites and clear the body; the awakened self, joined now to the indwelling presence, is nourished directly and has no need of the old emptying. The reading contrasts the labor of preparation with the abundance of union.

The Pharisees: the outer religious mind bound to rule and observance, the part of a person that keeps the forms without the inner fire Fasting: the phase of restraint and emptying that clears the body before the higher life awakens

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Ritual fasting, the way John's followers practice it, is the everyday self trying to manage its access to the sacred through measured self-denial, an inner container that has hardened into armor against the living depths.

John's followers pin onto Jesus's circle their own attachment to set forms, mistaking the cup for what it once held. Such fasting is an old wineskin: a container shaped by an earlier brush with the deep shared source, which those hungry for renewal will try to "hold fast" to by every means, even after the first life has passed through it. Fresh inner life rising from the true center cannot be poured into hardened habit without bursting it.

Live Matthew 9:14 today

  1. Look at one rule you keep on yourself out of habit, the diet, the hour, the streak, and ask honestly whether it is still feeding you or just being obeyed. Keep it if it is alive, let it go if it is not.
  2. When someone is doing it differently than you, resist the comparison out loud and in your head. Their season is not your season.
  3. When you feel the pull to judge whether you have done enough today, stop and name one thing you actually have. Enough is a thing you can feel, not only a thing you count.

Am I still doing this because it gives me life, or because I started?

Zen

When hungry, eat. When full, stop. The practice fits the hour instead of forcing every hour into the same shape.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The way is not for the one who eats too much or too little. Discipline is a bridge, not an address.
