Matthew 9:8 Meaning But When the Multitudes Saw It

But when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

What does Matthew 9:8 mean?

The crowd is right to marvel but not yet right about what it saw. It thinks a rare gift has been handed to one extraordinary man, when in truth the power shown belongs to every mind and was only demonstrated so that all might claim it.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The crowd is right to marvel but not yet right about what it saw. It thinks a rare gift has been handed to one extraordinary man, when in truth the power shown belongs to every mind and was only demonstrated so that all might claim it. To forgive is not a privilege granted to a few; it is the natural function of the mind whenever it changes teachers from fear to love.

The wonder they feel is the first stirring of recognition, the mind glimpsing its own forgotten strength in another. What they praise as given to men is nearer than that: it was never taken away, only unremembered until someone lived it plainly.

Multitudes: the many separate-seeming parts of one mind, still believing power lives outside them, beginning to recognize as another's what is in fact their own.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When the crowds praise God for giving such authority to a human being, the shared mind of the people casts its own sense of God outward onto a carrier it cannot yet find inside itself.

A paralyzed man has just stood and walked home: a picture of an everyday self frozen between waking life and its unlived depths, suddenly joined again to its deep center. The crowd's wonder is still that outward casting, not yet true growth. The hidden depths reach past the visible healer toward a god, using the human being as a screen the sense of God briefly shines through. Whatever authority the crowd hands to another is waiting to be drawn back into the mind that cast it there.

Live Matthew 9:8 today

  1. When you admire someone's patience or kindness today, name the same thing in yourself from a time you managed it. Admiration is usually recognition.
  2. Instead of telling a friend they are better at letting things go than you are, ask them how they do it and then try it once. Treat it as a skill you share, not a gift they got.
  3. In a tense exchange, remember you have the power to end the escalation right there. Nobody has to hand it to you, it is already in your hands.

What good thing do I keep praising in other people as if it were out of reach for me?

A seeker asks the master for enlightenment and is told he already owns a treasure house, so why go begging outside it. The teacher gives nothing, only points.

Upanishads

That which you are seeking is already what you are. The search looks outward only because the obvious has gone unremembered.
