CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

Corruption at the top and dishonesty in the streets are not separate problems. They feed each other. When the powerful are full of violence, ordinary people learn that lying is simply how one survives, and the deceit spreads downward until the whole community runs on falsehood.

A society rots from a thousand small betrayals of the truth, each one seemingly too minor to matter. But they compound. The rich seize by force and the rest deceive to defend themselves, and trust dies in both directions. A culture is only as sound as the words traded within it, and a people who have made lying ordinary have already begun to fall apart.

Live Micah 6:12 today

  1. Catch the small lie you were about to tell today, the exaggerated reason you were late, the story that makes you look a little better. Say the plain version instead.
  2. Do not pass along the thing you have not checked. Before you forward it to the group chat, ask yourself honestly whether you know it is true.
  3. When admitting a mistake at work would be easier to cover with a vague explanation, admit it clearly. One person being straight changes what the room thinks is normal.

Where have I let a small untruth stand because correcting it would embarrass me?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · Analects

When names no longer match things, nothing can be governed and nothing can be trusted. A society where words have gone slippery has lost the ground it stood on.

Buddhism · the Eightfold Path

Right speech means saying what is true, useful and kind, and refusing the easy lie even when it protects you. Each false word loosens the whole structure a little further.

Judaism · Talmud

The truth stands and the lie does not, because a lie needs constant propping up while truth needs nothing. Build on falsehood and you will spend your life holding it upright.
