Nehemiah 6:11 Meaning I Said

I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”

What does Nehemiah 6:11 mean?

Fear always tells you to run, to hide, to abandon your ground and save yourself. It whispers that your life is fragile and must be protected at any cost.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Fear always tells you to run, to hide, to abandon your ground and save yourself. It whispers that your life is fragile and must be protected at any cost. But there is in you something fear cannot touch, a stillness that has no need to flee.

Should such a man as I flee? When you know yourself as the awareness behind your thoughts, and not merely the frightened body, the question answers itself. You stay where you are, calm and unmoved, because you no longer identify with the anxious self that believes it must run to survive.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A settled sense of who you are refuses in one second what argument would still be debating an hour later.

Fear did its whole job and still came up empty. It supplied the counsel and the open door, then ran into a self-definition settled long before any threat showed up. Identity closes a question before argument opens it, and the chain is short: how a man defines himself decides which options he will even consider, and an option never considered cannot turn into an action.

Using God's house as a hiding place would have bought him his body and cost him the thing the whole work was running on, a character other people could predict. Anyone who leaves that question open ends up settling it under pressure, in the worst state of their life, in front of someone with an agenda.

Live Nehemiah 6:11 today

  1. When a message lands that makes your stomach drop, do not reply for ten minutes and do not reread it four times. Feel the fear move through your body and watch it pass without you acting on it.
  2. Say the honest thing to the person you have been avoiding, calmly and in a few words. You will find you can be nervous and steady at the same time.
  3. In a meeting where you would normally go quiet or agree too fast, stay with your actual view. Sit upright, breathe out, and let the silence be a little uncomfortable.

Where is fear telling me to leave a room I actually belong in?

It is not events that frighten us but our opinions about them. The threat shrinks the moment you stop agreeing with the story about it.
