Nehemiah 9:6 · World English Bible

Nehemiah 9:6 Meaning You Are Yahweh

You are Yahweh, even you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their army, the earth and all things that are on it, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all. The army of heaven worships you.

What does Nehemiah 9:6 mean?

Tawḥīd: Oneness Tawḥīd names one God and nothing beside him. A person walks around with a crowd of small powers in their head: money, the mood of whoever is in charge, luck, their own record of good and bad.

Tawḥīd: Oneness Tawḥīd names one God and nothing beside him. A person walks around with a crowd of small powers in their head: money, the mood of whoever is in charge, luck, their own record of good and bad. Naming a single source cuts all of that down to size, and the mind stops bargaining with a dozen masters.

Al-Qayyūm: The Self Sustaining A name of God in the Quran that al-Ghazali dwelt on, the one who stands by himself while everything else stands by him. People tend to picture the world as a machine wound up once and left to run. Under that name nothing runs by itself for a second, and being held up turns into the ordinary condition of every moment.

Tajdīd al-khalq: The renewal of creation each moment Ibn Arabi taught that nothing carries itself from one instant into the next; each instant is made new. So each morning arrives freshly given rather than left over from the day before. Someone who takes that in stops assuming tomorrow is owed to them, and starts treating an ordinary hour as something handed over.

Faqr: Poverty before God Faqr means having nothing of one's own, down to the next breath; the Quran calls people the poor ones and God the rich. Standing there empties out the quiet claim to have earned one's place and to be keeping it by effort. Admitting the debt comes as relief, since someone who owns nothing has nothing left to guard.

Tasbīḥ: Everything praises God Tasbīḥ, the praise a thing gives off simply by being what it is. The Quran says nothing exists that does not praise him, though people miss the sound of it. A person holding that in mind stops feeling like the only worshipper in an empty room, and joining in feels like falling in step with something already going on.

Begin with praise of your Lord, then ask: praise sets the order right The Prophet once told a man who launched straight into requests to praise God first. Leading with a list keeps a person at the center of their own prayer, measuring God by whether the list gets filled. Starting with what God has done fixes the proportions, so the asking comes from someone who already knows where they stand.

Live Nehemiah 9:6 today

  1. Take two minutes outside today, no phone, and look at something you did not make and do not maintain: a tree, the sky, a bird on a wire. Let the fact that it is being kept going without your help sink in.
  2. Before you ask anyone for anything today, including a favor in a group chat, start by saying one true good thing about where they are or what they have already done. Put the gift before the list.
  3. When the mood of whoever is in charge starts running your day, name the smaller powers you are bowing to, the number in the account, the metric, the opinion, and say plainly that none of them made the morning.

How much of your day is spent bargaining with things that are themselves being held up?

Taoism · Tao Te Ching 25

One source stands behind the heavens, the earth and everything moving in them, and it does not depend on any of it. Everything else leans, and that one does not.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The one reality holds all things from inside, and what looks like a crowd of separate powers is a single ground wearing many faces. Seeing that, a person stops negotiating with a dozen masters.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He kept returning to the whole, the vast order that his own small worries sat inside, and his troubles came back down to their real size. The universe is not a machine left running, it is held.
