Numbers 11:15 Meaning If You Treat Me This Way

If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favor in your sight; and don’t let me see my wretchedness.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A man bent under a weight too large begs God to end him rather than watch his own smallness one more day. The self-image has caved beneath the load. What he calls wretchedness is that fallen portrait of himself, magnified until it fills the whole view.

The cry is honest, and it is aimed above, yet the mistake sits in the mirror rather than in the man's worth. A picture crushed by pressure reads itself as ruined when it is only overloaded. Once the load lightens or the portrait lifts, the same man who wanted to die can stand. The smallness was the weight, not the worth of him.

Live Numbers 11:15 today

  1. When you hit the point today where you feel useless, name the load out loud instead of naming yourself. Too much on you is a different sentence than something wrong with me.
  2. Tell one person honestly how heavy it has been, without softening it into a joke. Saying it to a real face is what starts separating the weight from your worth.
  3. In the thick of a brutal stretch, put down one thing. Cancel it, delay it, hand it off, and see how much of the despair was the pile rather than you.

Is what I am calling failure actually just how much I am carrying right now?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. Under a heavy load the mind reports ruin where there is only strain.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The ox cannot be asked to do the horse's work and judged a failure for it. Mismatch the load and even strength looks like weakness.

Buddhism

The pain is one arrow, and the story that you are hopeless is a second one you fire yourself. Set down the second and the first becomes bearable.
