While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, Yahweh’s anger burned against the people, and Yahweh struck the people with a very great plague.

What does Numbers 11:33 mean?

Getting exactly what you demanded is the fastest way to learn the demand was never about the thing.

A demand made from a state of contempt gets answered on the terms of that state. The craving was a vehicle for certainty, for the familiar shape of a life already known, and keeping that vehicle required remembering slavery as abundance and reading rescue as deprivation.

That reading set the emotion, the emotion set the demand, and Yahweh's anger answers the meaning they assigned rather than the appetite they voiced. A person can be handed the exact thing he asked for and be ruined in the same second, because the request was never about the thing. Leaving a meaning like that in place costs a person every deliverance afterward, since each one arrives looking like a loss.

Live Numbers 11:33 today

  1. Think of something you pushed hard to get that did not make you happy once you had it. Ask what you were really after underneath, and whether the thing was ever going to carry it.
  2. Before you send the demanding message to your partner, your boss, your group chat, read it back and ask what mood wrote it. If it was written from contempt, getting a yes will not help you.
  3. When you are about to win an argument at work and you can feel the heat of it, pause and ask what you will actually have when you win. Sometimes the prize and the point are two different things.

What are you demanding right now that would not satisfy you even if it arrived today?

The first arrow is what happened. The second is the story you fire into yourself about it, and that one does the lasting damage.

People are disturbed not by events but by their opinions about events. Change the opinion and the event becomes survivable.

Fierce wanting costs more than it pays, and hoarding ends in loss. Knowing when to stop keeps a person whole.
