Send a mind out asking whether something is dangerous and it will come back with danger, accurately measured.

The outcome of a search is settled before anyone leaves, because the terms of the assignment decide which details count as findings. Ask about walls and fighting men and the eyes will do their work faithfully, gathering exactly that; what gets gathered sets the emotion of everyone who hears it, and that emotion writes the decision.

The question could have been what Yahweh has already done in that land, or what it would take to hold it. Framed instead around fortification and strength, forty days of honest looking produced an honest answer that talked a nation out of what it had been given. Nobody argues with data they went out to collect, which is how a fear-shaped question costs a generation the thing it was promised.

  1. When you are researching something you want to do and you find yourself only reading what could go wrong, spend equal time on how people actually pulled it off. Same hour, different search.
  2. When someone brings you an idea, make your first question about what would make it work before your question about what could break it. You are not being soft, you are just collecting both halves.
  3. Before you walk into the hard conversation, ask yourself what you are hoping to find out instead of what you are bracing for. The first question keeps your eyes open, the second one narrows them.

What have you been investigating in a way that could only confirm your fear?
