CYBERNETICS
Ten scouts had come back carrying the same picture of giants, and that shared image spread like a fever through the crowd. Caleb answers with a different mental scene: the land already taken, the people well able. The size of the walls had not changed. What changed was which picture a man let govern him.
Ability follows the estimate a person holds of himself before the trying ever begins. When Caleb quiets the room, he is replacing a self-image of grasshoppers with one equal to the task. The panic drains as the steadier picture takes hold. What a man believes he can do sets the ceiling on what he attempts.

SELF-HELP
Two men can gather identical facts and walk out with opposite destinies, because certainty is aimed, not found.
The other ten were already running at full faith, pointed at the disaster they could picture most clearly. Certainty about an unseen outcome sets the state, the state hands over the emotion, and dread writes its own intelligence: men who have sized themselves as grasshoppers recommend retreat, then spend forty years making the recommendation accurate.
One man aimed the identical faculty at the promise God had already spoken over that ground, and certainty like that cannot sit still; it becomes a decision with retreat cut off. Keeping the aim reversed costs the years, not the land: a lifetime of strength spent building the case for staying put.

The mind takes the color of its habitual thoughts. Dwell on your own incapacity and you will meet it everywhere.
The frog in the well argues that the sky is small, and he is sincere. He is describing the well, not the sky.
We are shaped by what we think. The picture a person holds goes before him and becomes the road he walks.
