Numbers 20:11 Meaning Moses Lifted Up His Hand

Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice, and water came out abundantly. The congregation and their livestock drank.

What does Numbers 20:11 mean?

The living waters are drawn out of the hardest, most fixed part of the self by an act of force rather than of speech. The rock is the dense, resistant nature in a person, and the rod striking it is the will laid hard upon that hardness; even so the flowing life pours out, and every faculty and even the animal nature within drinks.

Esoteric

The living waters are drawn out of the hardest, most fixed part of the self by an act of force rather than of speech. The rock is the dense, resistant nature in a person, and the rod striking it is the will laid hard upon that hardness; even so the flowing life pours out, and every faculty and even the animal nature within drinks. The abundant water is the deeper life released, enough to satisfy all the powers of the person at once.

The striking twice is the doubled effort, the second blow that betrays impatience where a word would have sufficed. Yet the water comes: the deeper life can be forced from the resistant self, and it feeds even the lowest faculties.

Rock: the dense, fixed, resistant nature in a person, out of which the living water is drawn Rod: the will and its power, laid hard upon the resistant self Water: the deeper flowing life released to satisfy every faculty of the person Beasts: the animal, appetite-driven faculties within, that also drink of the released life

Self-Help

Getting the result you wanted can hide the two millimetre deviation that costs you everything downstream.

Contempt for the people doing the asking moves a man's aim by two millimetres, and the arm follows whatever state he is standing in. The belief that a stubborn crowd has to be forced sets that state, the state selects force over word, and force repeated is the same small deviation held consistently.

Water came anyway, which is the expensive part. An outcome that arrives despite the method certifies the method, and a man goes on aiming two millimetres off for the rest of his work. The power was never his to generate; only the aim was his to hold. That one gesture cost him the ground he had spent forty years walking toward.

  1. Pick the one thing in yourself you have been shoving at for months, the habit, the mood, the fear. Sit with it for five minutes without pushing, and see what it says when you stop hitting it.
  2. In a conversation today where you usually press harder, try saying it once, plainly, and then stop. Let the silence do the second half of the work instead of your voice.
  3. When something goes wrong at work and the pressure spikes, you will get the result either way. Watch whether you got it by force or by a word, and be honest with yourself about the difference.

What in me finally opened, but at a cost I did not have to pay?

Tao Te Ching 78

Water is the softest thing there is, yet nothing beats it for wearing down what is hard and fixed. The yielding opens the rock, where force only cracks it.

Zen

A student hacked at the question for years with raw effort, and the answer finally came, though his teacher said a quieter man would have heard it on the first day. The breakthrough is real either way, but the second blow is the mark of the one who could not wait.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He told himself to dig inward, because the spring of goodness is buried in you and will keep flowing if you keep clearing it. The source is already there under the hard ground, waiting for whoever works down to it.
