Ego v. Being

When the voices of the crowd grow loud with fear and complaint, the pull is to be drawn into their noise, to let the collective drama become your own. But another movement is always available. You can turn from the clamor toward the stillness, toward the doorway where the mind falls silent.

To lay your face to the ground is the body's way of saying the ego surrenders now. And in that surrender the glory appeared. When you stop struggling and grow still, the presence you were seeking becomes visible, because only your own noise had ever hidden it.

Live Numbers 20:6 today

  1. When a group chat gets loud and heated today, put the phone face down and leave the room for three minutes. Do not draft a reply in your head; just let the noise fall away and feel the quiet underneath it.
  2. If someone comes to you venting hard, let them finish without matching their pitch. Keep your face soft and your hands still, and answer from the calm rather than the heat.
  3. Before you react to the email that spikes your pulse, stand up, feel both feet on the floor, and take five slow breaths. Then write the reply from the person you are after the five breaths, not the one you were before.

What have you been trying to hear that only your own noise was hiding?

Muddy water clears when you stop stirring it. Stillness is not something you add; it is what is there when you quit struggling.

Zen

A bell sounds clearly only in a quiet room. The teaching was always present, and it was your own noise that covered it.
