What does Numbers 21:7 mean?

Whatever a person will not link pain to is exactly where their next collapse is already scheduled.

Whatever a person links the most pain to is what they move away from hardest, and what gets asked for under pressure exposes the link. The pain attached to the venom and never to the speech that called it down, so the prayer targets the bite and leaves the appetite for complaint fully alive. Repentance that pain produced is repentance pain owns, and it expires when the symptom does.

The intercession lands, and Yahweh answers a motive he never required, but another person's prayer cannot do the relinking. Until pleasure attaches to becoming someone who does not speak that way, the desert will have to bite harder each time to get the same confession.

Live Numbers 21:7 today

  1. Think of a mess you apologized for recently and ask what you actually wanted to stop, the consequence or the habit. Write the honest answer somewhere only you will read.
  2. Next time you catch yourself tearing something down in a group chat, delete the message before sending and say the real thing instead, even if the real thing is smaller and less fun.
  3. When a day goes badly and you feel the complaint rising, say one accurate sentence about what is hard and then stop. The stopping is the practice, not the silence.

Am I sorry for what I did, or just for what it cost me?

Buddhism · the second noble truth

Relief from the symptom is not freedom, because the craving that produced it is still running. Pull the root, not the leaf.

Stoicism · Epictetus

If you want to stop being angry, stop feeding the habit of anger rather than waiting for the people around you to improve. The cure is upstream of the pain.

Tao Te Ching 71

To know your own sickness is the beginning of health. The trouble starts where a person treats the consequence and leaves the cause untouched.
