Ego v. Being

From the high rocks the seer looks down and beholds a people set apart, dwelling alone, not counted among the crowd of nations. Height changes what the eye can hold. From above, the borders and rivalries below fall into a single quiet view.

To dwell alone is not loneliness. Aloneness like this arrives when a person no longer draws their identity from belonging to the crowd, from the labels and comparisons the world runs on. Something in them stands apart, whole and unhurried, needing no group to tell it who it is. Seen from that inner height, the endless sorting into us and them simply loses its grip.

  2. When a conversation slides into complaining about a group of people, do not pile on and do not lecture anyone. Say one specific good thing about an actual person, and let the pull of the group lose its grip on you.
  3. In a tense work moment where everyone is lining up behind a position, hold off from joining a camp. Speak about the actual problem instead of about whose side is winning.

If no group had to tell you who you are, who would you be in the room today?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The crowd rushes and celebrates; the sage seems plain and alone, like a child before it learns to compare. Standing apart is not sadness, it is being unowned.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

View your life from above and the quarrels shrink to their real size. Borders, factions, and rivalries look like ants on a hill once you have the height.

Buddhism

A mind free of us and them has nothing to defend. Where there is no side to take, there is nothing for conflict to catch on.
