One decision made at the level of who you are does the work of a thousand decisions about what to do.

Willpower is expensive because it re-decides the same question every morning, and it runs out. A designation costs one decision and then holds, which is why taking the name settles food, hair and every contact in advance, so the ordinary hour arrives with nothing left to negotiate.

Nothing qualifies the person beforehand. A man or a woman declares themselves set apart to Yahweh, and the separation is the content of that name rather than the price of it. Take on the rules without taking on the identity and the rules last until the first hard week.

Live Numbers 6:2 today

  1. Instead of listing what you will do this month, pick what kind of person you are being, and let that answer the small choices as they come. Say it out loud once, in your own words.
  2. Tell one person the name you are taking on, the sort of friend, parent, or coworker you have decided to be. Saying it to a face makes it real in a way a note does not.
  3. When the hard hour comes and you feel yourself starting to negotiate, do not weigh the options. Ask who you already said you were and act from there.

Am I running on a list of rules, or on a decision about who I am?
