What does Numbers 7:23 mean?

Sacrifice is the discovery that the future can be bargained with, and the peace offering is where a man acts on that discovery deliberately. He brings the oxen and the rams and the unblemished lambs of the first year, the strongest and youngest of what he owns, and he surrenders them.

Sacrifice is the discovery that the future can be bargained with, and the peace offering is where a man acts on that discovery deliberately. He brings the oxen and the rams and the unblemished lambs of the first year, the strongest and youngest of what he owns, and he surrenders them. Nobody surrenders the runt. The whole meaning lives in giving up the best of the present so that something better might come.

Each leader is named and each portion is counted, because the offering is personal and exact. A man is what he is willing to relinquish. The lambs of the first year are his first increase, the part hardest to release, and releasing them is how he tells reality he trusts it. Give up what you value most, on purpose, and you have made a covenant with tomorrow.

  1. Look at the thing you are quietly protecting, the untouched savings, the free evening, the plan that is all yours, and give part of it away this week on purpose.
  2. Give someone your best attention, not the scraps. Put the phone in another room for the whole dinner, not just until it buzzes.
  3. When you are asked for help at the worst possible moment and you have a good reason to say no, say yes once, and feel what it costs. That cost is the point.

What is the best thing you own that you would never think of giving away?
