Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!”

What does Philippians 4:4 mean?

Joy repeated twice, and anchored both times in the Lord rather than in the day's weather, points to where lasting gladness is moored. Feelings tied to circumstance rise and fall with the circumstance.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

Joy repeated twice, and anchored both times in the Lord rather than in the day's weather, points to where lasting gladness is moored. Feelings tied to circumstance rise and fall with the circumstance. A joy fastened to something changeless keeps its footing when the ground moves.

The repetition is not mere emphasis. It works the way a rehearsed picture works, returned to until it settles into the self-image and holds through the hours when nothing outward supplies a reason. That is why the gladness can run always, and not only on the bright days.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

An emotion you can be commanded into is an emotion you were always able to produce on purpose.

Orders are only issued for things under a person's control, which makes this one a claim about how emotion works: the state is produced, by how the body is carried, where attention is aimed, and what words get spoken on the inside. The repetition is a second pull on the same lever, because one pass rarely moves a discouraged person.

Written from confinement, "always" removes the escape clause every person keeps, the one that says the state gets adjusted once circumstances improve. Give that clause up and joy aimed at the Lord becomes a discipline available in a cell. Keep it, and the quality of a life is set by whatever happens to be going on that week.

Live Philippians 4:4 today

  1. On the commute, instead of scrolling to fill the time, name three things that are genuinely good and true about your life right now, whether or not today feels good.
  2. Say something warm and specific to one person today, out loud or in a text, and mean it rather than performing it.
  3. When the day goes sideways, a cancelled plan, a long line, bad news in your inbox, say to yourself that this is the weather and not the ground. Then carry on being decent to whoever is in front of you.

Where is your gladness anchored at the moment, and would it survive a bad week?

Stoicism · Epictetus

The things outside you rise and fall on their own schedule, so a gladness built on them will do the same. Fasten your peace to what no one can take and it holds.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Joy that is practiced becomes a habit of mind, and a mind trained in it finds it available even on a hard day. What you return to often is what you become.

Sufism · Rumi

Sing not because the day deserves it but because the singing opens something. The gladness comes from the source, not from the weather.
