Proverbs 10:27 Meaning The Fear of Yahweh Prolongs Days

The fear of Yahweh prolongs days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

What does Proverbs 10:27 mean?

When the word fear is turned toward love it stops meaning dread and becomes reverence, the mind's glad turning toward the truth of what it is. Held that way, the mind lives in a kind of time that does not run out, because it is no longer spending itself defending a self that was never in danger.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When the word fear is turned toward love it stops meaning dread and becomes reverence, the mind's glad turning toward the truth of what it is. Held that way, the mind lives in a kind of time that does not run out, because it is no longer spending itself defending a self that was never in danger.

The mind that keeps guilt as its teacher lives a shorter, narrower life, not because love shortens it but because guilt is exhausting and eats its own hours worrying over threats it has invented. To revere love is simply to stop that inner spending, and a mind that stops it finds its days grow wide and unhurried, given back to it whole.

LORD: the presence of love within the mind, the truth that reverence turns toward. Wicked: the mind ruled by guilt, wearing itself thin in defense of a self that needs none.

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

A person who holds a steady reverence at the center of himself carries a self-image built to last. The mind's automatic mechanism works toward the picture it is given, and a life ordered around something larger than fear or appetite hands that mechanism a target worth reaching for. The days seem to open outward, unhurried, because the person inside them is not at war with himself.

The one who lives without that anchor spends himself against tension he never names. Small resentments and old scars keep the machinery straining, and strain wears a life down from the inside. Both men breathe the same air. One of them is quietly running toward a future he can see, and that steadiness is what stretches his years.

Live Proverbs 10:27 today

  1. Pick one worry you have been carrying all week and write down, in one line, what you would actually do if it happened. Then put the pen down and let the rehearsing stop.
  2. Give someone an unhurried half hour today with nothing scheduled after it, no glancing at the time, no phone on the table.
  3. When a deadline or a hard conversation has you tense all morning, name out loud what you are defending. Often it is only your image of yourself, and that was never under threat.

How many of my hours this week went to protecting something that was never in danger?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi described the person free of anxious striving as unhurried, their days wide, because they are not spending life guarding a position. Fretting is what makes time feel short.

Stoicism · Seneca

Seneca wrote that we are not given a short life, we make it short by squandering it, much of it on fears that never arrive. The hours go to the imagined threat.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi keeps returning to awe as a kind of homecoming, the heart turning toward what it loves and finding itself unguarded there. What is loved does not need defending against.
