CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The people are the many thoughts of a single mind, and without guidance they scatter and fall. A mind left to the ego alone is counseled by fear, and fear gives only one instruction, which is to attack and defend. Safety is not found in more voices of the same kind. It is found when the mind turns from its lone fearful adviser and lets a gentler teacher be heard among its thoughts, so that judgment is no longer the only counsel it knows.

To be safe is simply to be well advised within. A mind stands when love, not fear, is the voice it consults.

People: the many thoughts of one mind, the crowd of ideas that either stands together or scatters Counsellors: the inner voices a mind consults, the teachers of fear or of love that guide its every choice

SUFISM

Sufism

Whoever has no guide, the devil is his guide: nobody steers from nowhere Bayazid, an early teacher, said it, and Sufis have repeated it ever since. Anyone deciding alone is still being steered, just by whichever fear or want is loudest that day. From the inside that feels like clear thinking, and the mistake only shows up later, once it has cost something.

Shūrā: Consultation The Quran describes a healthy community as one that settles its affairs by talking them over. Asking costs a leader something, because the moment you ask, you admit your first read might be wrong. That small loss of face buys the correction, and people who refuse it keep making the same mistake at full speed.

The believer is a mirror to the believer: someone else can see your face A saying of the Prophet, and Sufis apply it plainly to faults. You cannot see your own expression without help, and the same holds for the hole in a plan you have stared at for weeks. A roomful of advisers helps because each person stands somewhere you do not, so together they cover what you would never catch alone.

Naṣīḥa: Wanting good for someone, and saying so honestly The Prophet said the whole religion comes down to this. Plenty of advisers only tell a leader what keeps them in the room, and that crowd is worthless no matter how large it grows. The counsel that saves a people comes from someone willing to be disliked for an afternoon because they care how things end.

Tawakkul: Trust in God In the Quran it arrives right after the instruction to consult others, at the moment the decision gets made. Endless consultation can turn into a hiding place, a stall so nobody has to be the one who chose. Trust lets a person close the discussion, act, and live with how it turns out.

Live Proverbs 11:14 today

  1. Before the first big decision of your day, sit quietly for two minutes and ask which feeling is actually driving it, fear or care.
  2. Take one thing you have been chewing on alone and say it to someone you trust, then actually listen to their answer rather than defending yours.
  3. When your phone lights up with something urgent, wait sixty seconds before replying, long enough that the answer comes from you and not from the jolt.
