Proverbs 13:19 Meaning Longing Fulfilled Is Sweet to the Soul

Longing fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools detest turning from evil.

What does Proverbs 13:19 mean?

When the mind's deepest longing is met, the longing for peace that lies beneath every smaller want, a sweetness fills it that no external gain could imitate, because it has finally received what it was always truly seeking. Every desire the ego chases is a disguised reaching for this, and only love answers it.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When the mind's deepest longing is met, the longing for peace that lies beneath every smaller want, a sweetness fills it that no external gain could imitate, because it has finally received what it was always truly seeking. Every desire the ego chases is a disguised reaching for this, and only love answers it. What satisfies is not the thing obtained but the return home the mind mistook it for.

Yet the ego recoils from letting go of what harms it, guarding its grievances and its guilt as though they were treasures, so that turning from attack feels to it like loss. A mind still identified with fear clings to its darkness and calls the light unbearable. The healing begins when it sees that what it defends is exactly what was hurting it.

Soul: the deepest center of the mind, whose one true longing is for the peace of love beneath every lesser want.

Live Proverbs 13:19 today

  1. Name the thing you keep nursing, the old grievance you replay while brushing your teeth. Set it down for one day and see what the quiet feels like.
  2. With someone you have been cool toward, be warm first. Letting the standoff end will feel like losing for about ten seconds, then it will feel like relief.
  3. When you get the thing you wanted and the satisfaction thins out within the hour, stop and ask what you were actually hungry for. Stay with that question instead of lining up the next want.

What am I holding onto that I secretly know is the source of the ache?

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The thirst does not end by being given more to drink. Peace arrives when the wanting itself is set down.

Stoicism · Seneca

It is not the one who has little who is poor, but the one who craves more. The lack lives in the wanting, not in what is owned.

Sufism · Rumi

The wound you keep returning to is the place where the light wants in. What you have been guarding is exactly what has been hurting you.
