Proverbs 14:23 Meaning In All Hard Work There Is Profit

In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.

What does Proverbs 14:23 mean?

The labor that profits is the mind's real work, the willingness to look at its own thoughts and let them be corrected, and this always yields something because it is the one thing that changes anything. To do this inner work is to trade fear's version of a situation for love's, and no such exchange is ever wasted.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The labor that profits is the mind's real work, the willingness to look at its own thoughts and let them be corrected, and this always yields something because it is the one thing that changes anything. To do this inner work is to trade fear's version of a situation for love's, and no such exchange is ever wasted.

Mere talk that stays on the lips is the ego's substitute for that work, a rehearsing of complaint and defense that leaves the mind exactly as poor as it began. The point is not that words are cheap but that only a change of teacher within can enrich a mind, and no amount of speaking about peace can stand in for choosing it.

Lips: the ego's talk that circles a grievance without ever choosing to lay it down, and so leaves the mind empty

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Describing the plan out loud pays a person the feeling of having done it, which is why it never gets done.

Every intention carries a charge of emotion, and that charge is the only fuel the work will ever get. Spend it on sentences and the brain files the warmth as completion, the pressure that would have moved a hand drops away, and the hand stays where it was.

Sweat costs now and pays later; talk pays now and costs later, so anyone steering by the nearest comfort picks the sentence over the shovel a thousand times without once deciding to. That thousand is the poverty, and the distance between what a person could have built and what they built widens until they stop believing their own announcements.

Live Proverbs 14:23 today

  1. Take the thing you have been talking about doing and do five minutes of it today, before you say another word about it.
  2. Next time you are about to tell a friend the same complaint for the third time, say the one thing you could actually change instead, even if it is small.
  3. In a meeting where talk is circling, ask what the next concrete step is and offer to take one piece of it yourself.

Where am I talking about peace instead of choosing it?

After the insight, the dishes still need washing. The practice is the doing, not the describing of it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Do not talk about what a good person is like; be one. Sheep do not bring the shepherd grass to prove they have eaten.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The one who talks endlessly of the way has usually stopped walking it. Words about water will not make anyone less thirsty.
