Proverbs 14:28 Meaning In the Multitude of People Is

In the multitude of people is the king’s glory, but in the lack of people is the destruction of the prince.

What does Proverbs 14:28 mean?

The ego measures its worth by what surrounds it, counting the many as proof that it exists and dreading their absence as its undoing. A mind ruled this way believes it is only as real as the crowd that reflects it, and so it clings to numbers, mistaking a gathering of others for its own standing.

The ego measures its worth by what surrounds it, counting the many as proof that it exists and dreading their absence as its undoing. A mind ruled this way believes it is only as real as the crowd that reflects it, and so it clings to numbers, mistaking a gathering of others for its own standing.

But a self that depends on the many for its being has already forgotten what it is. The correction is to see that worth was never given by anything outside, and a mind resting in love needs no multitude to know it is whole, and no emptiness can threaten what love holds secure.

King: the part of the mind that believes its worth is granted by the many who surround it Prince: the same self undone when the crowd withdraws, the ego's fear that it is nothing without others to reflect it

Live Proverbs 14:28 today

  1. Post nothing today, or if you do, do not go back to check the numbers. See what the day feels like without that scoreboard running.
  2. Give someone your full attention in a one on one conversation today, and let it be enough that just the two of you were there. No story to tell about it later.
  3. When a group chat goes quiet after you say something, or a message sits unread, let it sit. The silence is not a verdict on you.

If no one were counting, who would you be today?

Knowing other people is clever, knowing yourself is clear sight. Power over others is small next to being at home in yourself.

Reputation belongs to other people, not to you. Build your life on what is actually yours and no crowd can hand it to you or take it away.

The one who needs applause has handed his center to whoever is clapping. Let that go and you walk free whether anyone is watching or not.
