The heart of one who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.

What does Proverbs 15:14 mean?

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind at peace hungers for what is true and reaches quietly toward it, because part of it remembers the reality it came from and wants nothing less. The heart that has begun to understand seeks the knowledge that heals, the certainty of its own innocence. But a mind ruled by fear keeps chewing the same empty grievances, feeding on illusion as though it were bread, and so stays hungry no matter how much it consumes.

What a mind takes in, it becomes. Seek the truth and be nourished; live on the ego's complaints and starve on a full plate, for illusion can never satisfy the longing only love was made to meet.

Heart of him that hath understanding: the mind beginning to remember what is real, the awakened self that reaches toward the knowledge which heals Mouth of fools: the appetite of the fearful mind, the part that keeps swallowing grievance and illusion and is never fed Foolishness: (no symbol; the reading carries this)

CYBERNETICS

Cybernetics

What a person keeps taking in becomes the raw material the self-image is built from. A mind that reaches for solid understanding feeds the mechanism with pictures worth acting on, and it grows toward the level of what it is fed.

The fool lives on a diet of nonsense and slowly comes to match it, because the machinery cannot build anything sturdier than its ingredients. A man who steadily feeds on complaint and rumor shapes a smaller, more frightened self without meaning to. Attention chooses the meal. What the inner life is fed is what it becomes.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

What a person goes hunting for decides what they get fed, and what they get fed decides who they become.

A mind sent out after understanding strips value from a dull conversation, a setback, even an insult, because a question in motion turns raw material into nourishment. Nothing gets sorted in a mind that sent nothing out.

Folly is grazed rather than chosen, taken in from whatever drifts within reach of someone who asked nothing, and the intake becomes belief, belief sets state, and state picks the next thing that drifts by. Without a standing question, a person does not choose their diet; the room they happen to be standing in chooses it.

Live Proverbs 15:14 today

  1. When you reach for your phone out of boredom, ask what you are actually hungry for, then give yourself five minutes of quiet instead.
  2. If a conversation with a friend has become the same complaint on repeat, gently turn it. Ask them a real question about their life.
  3. On a stressful day, stop the loop of replaying what someone did to you. Say to yourself, this is not feeding me, and give your attention to the next real thing in front of you.

What have I been living on that never satisfies me?

The deep hunger of a person is for what is real, and nothing smaller will ever fill it. Feed on appearances and you stay starving.

A mind chewing the same resentment over and over is eating its own suffering and calling it a meal. Put the plate down.

You carry a basket of fresh bread on your head and still go door to door begging for crusts. What you are starving for is already with you.
