Proverbs 15:22 Meaning Where There Is No Counsel

Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established.

What does Proverbs 15:22 mean?

A mind that plans in secret, listening only to itself, has already chosen fear as its teacher, and the plans of fear collapse because they are built to defend a self that was never in danger. The ego wants to decide alone, for alone it can keep the belief in separation intact.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind that plans in secret, listening only to itself, has already chosen fear as its teacher, and the plans of fear collapse because they are built to defend a self that was never in danger. The ego wants to decide alone, for alone it can keep the belief in separation intact. But a purpose steadies the moment the mind stops trusting its private counsel and lets a gentler Voice be heard.

What looks like gathering more advisors is really the willingness to admit that one small frightened self cannot see the whole, and to ask for correction. When a mind opens that way, it is no longer plotting against a world it fears; it is being taught, and what love teaches always holds.

Counsellors: the many gentle promptings toward love the mind can consult once it stops listening only to its own fear.

ʿUjb: Being pleased with yourself Al-Ghazali uses this word for the quiet satisfaction a person takes in their own thinking. It feels like plain confidence, so a plan seems finished the moment it feels good. Asking anyone else then looks like a formality worth skipping, and the door shuts before a single person has knocked.

Whoever has no teacher takes Satan for a guide: going alone is not neutral ground Bayazid Bistami said it, and Rumi repeated it for centuries after. Working alone, a person hears their own hunches in the same voice they would use for wisdom, and nothing pushes back. Whatever they already want, their thinking supplies reasons for, so no mistake gets caught while it is still small.

Mashwara: Consultation Mashwara is the habit of asking others before deciding. The Quran tells the Prophet to consult the people around him, which settles any worry that asking makes a leader look weak. Once a decision gets talked through out loud, the parts that only held together inside one head begin to show.

The elephant in the dark: each hand finds only one part Rumi tells of people in a dark room touching an elephant, each certain of what they felt. Nobody lies, and nobody has the whole animal, which is how a plan looks from inside one person's view. Several honest partial reports, set beside each other, give a shape that no single one of them held.

Naṣīḥa: Sincere advice Naṣīḥa is advice given because you want good for the person hearing it. The Prophet said that the religion is sincere counsel, which puts honest speech at the center of things rather than at the edges. Advisers who mainly want to stay agreeable add bodies to the room and nothing more, so a crowd helps only when someone in it will disagree.

Live Proverbs 15:22 today

  1. Before you act on the plan you built in your head at 2am, write it down and read it back in daylight. Fear plans beautifully and badly.
  2. Tell one person the thing you have been turning over alone, a money worry, a job decision, a conversation you are dreading. Ask what they see that you do not.
  3. When you feel the urge to just handle it yourself and tell no one, at work or at home, send the message asking for input instead. Admitting you cannot see the whole picture is not weakness, it is accuracy.

What have I been deciding alone because being advised would mean admitting I am scared?
