Proverbs 15:24 Meaning The Path of Life Leads Upward

The path of life leads upward for the wise, to keep him from going downward to Sheol.

What does Proverbs 15:24 mean?

There is only one real choice, and it is which direction the mind will look. To look downward is to keep believing in guilt, separation, and a self trapped in a body that suffers; that is the whole of what is meant by hell, a state of mind and not a place.

There is only one real choice, and it is which direction the mind will look. To look downward is to keep believing in guilt, separation, and a self trapped in a body that suffers; that is the whole of what is meant by hell, a state of mind and not a place. To look upward is simply to change teachers, to let love interpret what fear had made terrifying.

Wisdom here is nothing lofty. It is the quiet readiness to stop rehearsing one's own condemnation and to accept instead that innocence, not punishment, is the truth about the mind. The way up and the way down are the same road walked with a different guide, and life is only the mind that has chosen the gentler One.

Hell beneath: the state of a mind that has believed in its own guilt and made a prison of it, near and vivid yet entirely imagined.

There is a road that runs upward through the body, and the one who understands takes it, drawing consciousness up from the belly toward the head where the light lives. Above and beneath are not places in the sky and under the earth but heights and depths in the single column of the spine. Hell beneath is the lower nature, the churning of appetite and fear seated in the gut, the region where a person burns without knowing why.

To climb is to lift attention out of that furnace and settle it in the higher centers. Wisdom is nothing more than knowing which direction in the body leads to life.

Above: the higher centers in the head and crown where clear awareness and light reside Hell beneath: the lower nature seated in the belly, the burning of appetite, craving, and fear

Live Proverbs 15:24 today

  1. When you catch yourself replaying an old mistake for the hundredth time, say out loud that you are done rehearsing it. You are allowed to put it down.
  2. With someone you have quietly written off, try seeing them once today as a person doing their best badly. Same person, different direction of looking.
  3. In traffic or a long line, when your mood starts sliding downward, name what is happening and choose the gentler read of it. The road is the same, the guide is yours to pick.

Which direction has my attention been facing today, and did I choose it?

Buddhism · Dhammapada

You are shaped by what you keep thinking. The mind that rehearses its own suffering builds a world out of it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can choose, right now, which direction your attention faces. Your peace depends on that turn, not on what happened.

Advaita Vedanta

The bondage and the freedom are both in how you see yourself. Nothing moves but your understanding, and everything changes.
