Proverbs 16:19 Meaning It Is Better to Be
It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, than to divide the plunder with the proud.

Proverbs 16:19 · World English Bible
It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, than to divide the plunder with the proud.
The ego offers the mind winnings, a share in what was taken by attack, and it names this gain. But every prize divided among the proud is bought with the belief that another had to lose, and a mind that accepts it has agreed that separation pays.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The ego offers the mind winnings, a share in what was taken by attack, and it names this gain. But every prize divided among the proud is bought with the belief that another had to lose, and a mind that accepts it has agreed that separation pays. Humility is not lowliness of self but the willingness to stand where love stands, joined with those the world calls small, wanting nothing that costs another his innocence. The mind chooses again between two teachers, and one of them holds out plunder while the other holds out peace.
To want nothing that was won by attack is simply to remember that nothing real is ever divided.

EGO & BEING
Pride is the ego's endless need to have more and to stand above others. To divide the spoil with the proud is to share in that hunger for gain, for winning, for being seen as superior, and it brings no lasting peace, because the ego can never be satisfied for long.
A humble spirit is not weakness. It is the freedom of one who no longer needs to prove or enlarge the self. When you rest in that simple state of being, without grasping for advantage, you find what the proud never find in any spoil, a contentment that does not depend on having more.

BUDDHISM
Māna: Conceit
The proud carving up the spoil are swollen with I won, I have, I stand above the rest of you. That swelling is the endless measuring of self against the beaten, a hunger no heap of plunder has ever filled. A man rises on his toes among shorter people and calls the aching strain his true height.
Nivāta: Humility
An humble spirit lets the self settle low enough to sit among the lowly without a flush of shame. Lowliness here is the ground floor, level and firm, where pride cannot topple you because you already stepped down of your own will. Water runs to the bottom of the valley and rests there wide and quiet.
Santuṭṭhi: Contentment
Better it is weighs the small honest portion and finds it heavier than the whole divided spoil. Contentment is the ease of someone who has enough and knows it, richer with little than the proud are with their groaning tables. A plain bowl of rice eaten in peace outlasts a feast eaten in fear of losing it.
Alobha: Non-greed
Turning from the spoil altogether is the open hand that neither snatches the plunder nor grudges another his cut. Non-greed cools the grabbing that drives the proud to bloody the field and then quarrel over the winnings. The fingers uncurl, and the loot they were clutching so hard quietly loses all its heat.
Adosa: Non-hatred
Spoil is taken by force, and the humble spirit steps clear of the ill will that sharpened the sword to seize it. Setting down the wish to conquer sets down the aversion that treats other people as prey to be stripped. An unclenched jaw and a slow breath cool a heart that was heating toward a fight.

SUFISM
The proud man measures himself by the size of his pile, and the bigger it grows the smaller his heart becomes, until no room is left for anyone but himself. That swelling is the disease. The cure is to sit a while among people who have nothing and find they are not beneath him at all.
In the lowly spirit that expects no applause, God is nearer than He ever is at the top of the heap. The plunder blinds; the empty hand can still see. What looks like the loser's share turns out to be the better light.

AWARENESS
Lowliness is the condition of a man with no center to defend. He can be poor without feeling poor, because nothing in him is keeping score.
Plunder is always taken from someone, and the pride that divides it needs the taking more than it needs the goods. Each share confirms the false center, and a center built that way has to be fed again tomorrow, which is why the proud never arrive anywhere. Cultivated humility fails for the same reason. A man practicing lowliness is still standing at the middle of his own picture, watching himself be lowly.
Christian Psychology lens
Is there anything you are enjoying right now that somebody paid for without agreeing to?
The highest good is like water, which settles in the low places everyone else avoids and nourishes all of it without competing. Because it does not fight, nothing is lost to it.
If you want the seat at the banquet, you must pay what it costs, and sometimes the price is flattery or another person's dignity. Decide honestly whether it is worth that, and if not, let it pass without resentment.
Who is rich? The one who is content with what he has. The share you did not have to take from anyone is the only share that stays yours.
