Proverbs 16:8 Meaning Better Is a Little with Righteousness

Better is a little with righteousness, than great revenues with injustice.

What does Proverbs 16:8 mean?

The ego measures a mind by what it can pile up, and so it teaches that more is safety and abundance is peace. But a mind at rest with love needs almost nothing to be whole, while a mind that gathers by attack drags its guilt behind every gain.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The ego measures a mind by what it can pile up, and so it teaches that more is safety and abundance is peace. But a mind at rest with love needs almost nothing to be whole, while a mind that gathers by attack drags its guilt behind every gain. What is heaped up wrongly can never comfort, because the getting itself was a quiet violence against a brother.

So the small holding of a peaceful mind outweighs the vast holdings of a fearful one. Wealth was never the treasure; the state of the mind that holds it was. A mind chooses its teacher long before it counts its gains, and that choice, not the sum, decides whether it rests.

Live Proverbs 16:8 today

  1. Look at one thing you have been telling yourself you need to buy or earn before you can relax. Ask honestly whether the restlessness would actually stop once you had it.
  2. Next time a friend shares good news about money or a promotion, let yourself be plainly glad for them, with nothing underneath it keeping score.
  3. If a shortcut at work would get you ahead but would quietly cost someone else, take the slower honest road. You will sleep differently, and that is the whole point.

What do I already have enough of, that I keep treating as not enough?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 33

The one who knows they have enough is already rich. Wealth is a state of mind long before it is a number.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He taught that wealth is not having many things but wanting few. A small life held calmly is larger than a big one held in fear.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Craving grows the more it is fed, like a fire given fuel. What you gain by grasping arrives already carrying its own unease.
