Proverbs 17:12 Meaning Let a Bear Robbed of Her Cubs

Let a bear robbed of her cubs meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

What does Proverbs 17:12 mean?

Raw and grieving fury, however dangerous, is at least a straight thing the mind can see coming; far more perilous is the mind lost in its own foolishness, for the ego's folly is a self that has closed against correction and cannot be reasoned toward love. The one deceived by separation carries a subtler ruin than open rage, because it does not know it is mistaken and so defends the very fear that wounds it.

The correction begins with willingness, since even the fiercest feeling can be met and healed, but the mind that will not question its own thoughts leaves love no opening at all.

Bear robbed of her whelps: a mind in raw and open fury, dangerous yet plain to see, a wound the light can still reach because it hides nothing Fool: the mind closed within its own error, more perilous than rage because it defends its fear and leaves forgiveness no way in

  1. Pick one opinion you hold firmly and spend ten minutes honestly reading the best version of the other side. Not to win, just to see it.
  2. When someone is openly angry at you today, stay in the room with it. Open anger is easier to heal than the polite certainty that will not be questioned.
  3. In a heated discussion at work, ask one real question instead of making your point again. Ask what you are missing, and then actually wait for the answer.
