Proverbs 17:8 Meaning A Bribe Is a Precious Stone

A bribe is a precious stone in the eyes of him who gives it; wherever he turns, he prospers.

What does Proverbs 17:8 mean?

The ego sees a gift as a jewel that buys advantage, a bribe held in the hand to bend the world in its favor, and it prizes only what it can use to secure itself against a threat it imagines everywhere. But there is another kind of giving that needs no return, and it is this that truly prospers, for a mind that offers love without price finds love wherever it turns, since what it extends is exactly what it then perceives.

The correction is to let the stone become the miracle rather than the bribe, so that giving asks nothing of the world and yet makes everything it meets shine back the innocence it brought.

Gift: the offering a mind makes to another, which the ego treats as a bribe to gain safety but which love extends freely as the miracle Precious stone: the value the mind places on what it gives, either the false jewel of advantage or the true worth of love returned to its giver

Live Proverbs 17:8 today

  1. Do one useful thing today that nobody will ever trace back to you. Wipe the counter, refill the paper, pay the small thing off, say nothing.
  2. Help one person this week without mentioning it to them later and without mentioning it to anyone else. If you catch yourself drafting the mention, drop it.
  3. When you are stretched thin and feel the urge to remind someone what you did for them, let that sentence die in your mouth. Then watch how much lighter the next hour is.

Tao Te Ching

The sage gives without storing up credit, and because nothing is withheld, nothing runs out. The giving that expects return has already spent itself.

Bhagavad Gita

Act, and let go of the fruit of the action. A gift tied to its outcome is a transaction wearing a gift's clothing.

Judaism · Maimonides

The highest giving is the kind where the giver and receiver never learn each other's names. No one is bought and no one is owed.
